A TRIBUTE TO JOSEPH DE LORD OUR BEST FRIEND.

‘Rest in peace Joseph and May Perpetual light shine upon you, our dearest friend from Zanzibar from eons ago. Stay safe in the bosom of our Lord Jesus and enjoy His everlasting Love and Light.’ Your surname ‘De Lord‘ says it all.

To know ! To love ! And then to part ! So the sad story of many a broken heart ! However, we must acknowledge that God has been good to us …. and to Joseph and to all of us from our former abode ‘UNGUJA’.

Joe De Lord was one such soul who was much loved and cherished by All former Zanzibaries' pre-1964. My dad, Aleixo de Souza, instructor at Cable and Wireless, captain of Football, Hockey and Cricket teams, besides being an avid and invaluable player in each sport, was very impressed by his young confres who made up the several teams in our beloved Zanzibar. Our Dad’s word was as good as gold, and so were his teams. Joe De Lord was one such avid supporter of all his confrères and brothers who were great sportsman, and, who won my father’s heart as did all of the other team members. Cudos to Joseph.

And we, the younger generation, remember and cherish all of Joe’s support at the Reunions, Get togethers, and festive occasions. Joe, and his family, together with our family and other Zanzibaries', was, and has been, truly involved in everything Zanzibar which was paradise on earth once upon a time. Never before was there such a cosmopolitan little island paradise ever been found on our planet, and will ever be so. Therein, Joe’s parents and siblings were the crème de la crème. The loss of Joe De Lord is heartbreaking for his family and us his friends. We have much to remember and to emulate in saluting Joe and his family, as we send him off to that heavenly banquet with Our Lord.

‘Joe, Farewell once more dear friend and God bless. Thank you for your wonderful presence, support and leadership in making life on earth a better place to live in, and I’m sure you’ll be doing
so also in heaven. God bless and farewell dear friend.’ this picture captures it All. Viva!

Much love and sincerest condolences to Joe’s family.

Most sincerely,

Benny & Betty De Souza

Benny adds:-

P.S.
Very Special Thanks to Joe De Lord's immediate family members who certainly gave Joe 'A King's Send-off ' with a well organised Requiem Mass, a complete full church, of family members, friends & relatives, followed by the wake with wonderful delicious food and drinks flowing all afternoon. Tributes by family members and grandchildren truly said it all.

I would like to add that as Joe De Lord has been a figurehead in all Social activities, mainly connected to our SJCS Zanzibar Reunions 2005 & 2008, I have added photos of our two main Zanzibari' Reunions to bring back sweet memories.  Joe has been instrumental in organising several get-togethers of our Zanzibar folks residing in the UK and it has always been a pleasure working with Joe.

Joe De Lord has been my guiding light from the time I came to the UK since 1964 and I have always taken his advice followed by his brother Tony De Lord who is one of my best friends.

To conclude, Joe De Lord is blessed and in our heart and soul Joe De Lord  is 'A Saint'.

Love and kisses to Genny and all the De Lord family members.

Please accept our little blogspot 'A Tribute to Joseph De Lord Our Best Friend' as a little gift from Betty, Benny and All Joe's Global friends.

Love
Benny & Betty

Some Tributes

My dearest Genny and Family, et All,

The loss of a dear one is one of the most painful griefs we can endure. Having lost Mike, my beloved husband and best friend in 2020 , I know the pain Genny and her family are experiencing at the loss of Joseph, their beloved .

However, as friends of Jesus, we must know that God is our best friend who will help us endure despite all the odds. We must do our best to continue being His best friends regardless.

I knew the De Lord family mostly via Irene their mother , and Loretta, their sister when I was a school girl. Our mothers , Laurie  and Irene , were good friends and I was the beneficiary of the goodwill teas exchanged between them. They were the crème de la crème from every point of view. Memories are all we have now as we live our lives in various climes around the world. Zanzibar was that ‘Paradise on Earth’ from which wonderful people emerged par excellence and sans denial.

You can say that our three families…the Cardozo ‘s, De Lord’s and the De Souza’s were truly blest in friendship when I was growing up as a schoolgirl in Zanzibar….going to tea with them and receiving tuitions , playing ‘Nage’ and eating ‘kungus ‘ that Bosco would knock down from the trees in his yard, … were beautiful memories of once upon a time, long long ago…..wonderfully precious  friendships.

I send Genny and her family my sincerest condolences, love and blessings. Stay strong. Stay focused. God loves you.

Joseph was a jewel in Zanzibar’s crown and all of us Zanzibari's were blest to have known him. May he rest in peace with eternal rest in Jesus our Lord and our God.

Song of the day :- BE NOT AFRAID, I GO BEFORE ALWAYS… AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. ❤️😇🙏😇❤️

All my love to Joseph’s family and grieving friends …. my siblings too, who, I’m sure with me, can share their own memories of this Once upon a time friendship, particularly, Ben. God bless.

Dear Jenny and all the family,

Although it’s hard to understand why times like this must be, trust in The Good Lord for His Love is infinite.

Loss is something we all experience at some time, but no one can understand exactly what you all are feeling right now. As time goes by the precious happy memories you all shared will bring you comfort and peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your sad loss of your beloved Joe, father and grandfather and we send our deepest sympathy. We have offered a Perpetual Mass for Joe. May his soul rest in peace.

Fondest love and GodBless.
Alexander and Annabella.

December 1968, is the first time I met Joseph de Lord and Genny as My extended family  in Mombasa Cardozo House.

We had little contact in Zanzibar  as you know I only arrived at St Joseph Convent at Second grand having spent two year with my Maternal Grandparents in Karachi and the Cardozos left in 1951..  Easter time  I saw them briefly on Alto Povorim in Goa.   I knew Joe's Mom adn sister Lorrta a bit more during my High School collge year that came to an abrupt end with the REvolution Jan 12 1964 ... 60 years have passed since that God chosen time  for us to all leave Our Island Paradise Zanzibar

Kenya and Mombasa in particular softened the blow and as you see in the Photo  we had met nad married our Spouses and partners  the same time as did your sister Yvette in that TRANSITION  of TRANS MISSION.  We  had been part of a unique a Political Social Religious Cultural Mission such as no other on earth. The Indian Ocean of which you became the foremost exploers of what lies beneath the surface.. literally!  called us away from the midset and thinking thast was land based Village based Property based .. Fatherland Motherland- INheritance heritage .. to what is a Mobile ever moving never rooted Human Soul. Jospeh de Lord followed the journey set by his grandparents and ours from India over that  very Ocean  with is seas in Arabia around Magadascar, Seychells Reunion Islands .. while seeing the phenomenon now called Cable and Wireless SAttelite Communicantions technology also something you have expertise about.  Most of all however and on this site in particular it is as pointed out by everyone who knew Joe de Lord You nad I daresay myself, the power and wonder of Music that produced a Bond so deep in "the soul" that nothing, neither food, drink or any other pleasure can reach  nor can that soul be lifted Up Up and away to the sublime heights where God the Divine Almighty Creator of That SOUL knit  in a Mother's Womb asit is written in Ancent texts of the Hebrew Bible.. wher David a Shepherd Boy with his harp and music rose up to be a ing remembered to this day  in the King Dasvid Hotel in Jerusaelm.

This paradox of somethign so amazing so great in someperson place or thing so commonplace is seen perfectly in Our Goan Family Community Joe De Lord was so happy with nad so ivloved in as memoirs and living history.

In the Photo above Joe Genny and their three children came to Her Family home for the first time since 1 9 6 4.. They had moved on had another child seen there and came to celebrate Christmas.   Bosco adn I had got engaged and married 60 years ago  so a fitting remembrance of how we all journey togther  we had caught up and had also had 2 children  The two you see there now  a fulfilment of grandparents dream that they will carry their Dad to wehere he needs to be  to the Grand send off for Joe. and to his resting place in Hendon Cemetery where Mrs Irene De Lord, Mrs Beatrice Cardozo lie in peace  as do so many other family and friends from East Africa have their bones amid the stones placed there to mark their presence.

But Theat SOUL  no longer an individual but a whole community family is vast there is no end in sight and the beginng is as facinating no matter where we choose to start Our Story.

I noticed the Link sent by the de Lord family for the Services played Sinatra's My Way and Moon River (from Breakfast at Tiffany's? )   the drifters  off to see the world.. particularly apt for Joe whose brother in law Petyer Wood Loretta Husband began the connection to Pan Am that merged into UNited Airlines  and is inspearable from affliates.

So on air by sea or on land.   One Soul One Spirit One social structure o mind heart Body adn senses.. is who we all have become in the One Hundrea years we have direct acess too thanks to those still with us who have opened Our hearts adn yeyes to see who our Zanzibar Goan Community was for that short 60 years  when two generations of Cardozo de Lords - lived there and made a tremendous impression on me and my siblings who were only to have known that partiocular peculiar "Paradise" for our short time there together with our youngest brother  born in the " Vuga House years"  1951Nov - Jan 12 1964.!

He too is a Joe   he too was Baprized in the same Font as Joe de Lord he too remembers Joe as Outstanding loving caring family friend.

Friends are "like family" when Family values friends.

Hence my first posting on this site  is to recall in Music the Many Bands and Dances and Gatherings we participated.. adn yes let us not forget Project Mercury that Frook Bulsara made Famous  while Joe de Lord behind the scenes made sure that the Personell were trated with respect and care..   Mercury Mars or Venus  may be the desired destination of those who hunger for hwat's Out There but  as we see Our Goan Soul is happiest when it dives deep into iteslf and brings up the exquisite delights best seen nd know to a "deep sea diver "  like you

Thank You dear neighbor from way back when  Thank you to You for the example you now give nad share with Betty   for keeping close to Zanzibaris and Genny Joe ..with all the Saints  Joseph Anthony  always one with us.. and of course the powerful unseen  " Better Angels"..keeping each of us  ever in tune with the music  - we heard and made in what our days beside the Coral Reef ...

Now face time with
Genny and Tom etc
Bye
